Terry Pratchett– Truckers
Nomes lived beyond sight and hearing of humans. Nomes think they sound like cows and move like slugs. On the upside humans did create "The Store" unfortunately they were also going to knock it down and that's the problem; how does a 4" creature drive an 18 wheeler truck?
Answer: using semaphore, string, levers and not by himself.
Although this is a young adults book I have to say I'm not sure exactly how it differs from standard Pratchett fare except perhaps that the story is a bit thinner. Fortunately this is the first book in a trilogy and it fills out but if I didn't have the other books to hand I may not have continued with The Bromeliad Trilogy which continues with Diggers and Wings.
