Ian Rankin Exit Music

This is the last Inspector Rebus novel that Ian Rankin is writing. It marks the end of the churlish detectives career but, hopefully, not the end of Rankin's writing career.
Dispensing with two beloved characters in one book i.e. Rebus and Edinburgh, leaves me a little concerned about his future works. I've read Watchman, Witch and Bleeding Hearts none of which are set in Edinburgh or feature Rebus. While they are all a cut above I'm not sure he will ever recreate the synergy that made the Rebus novels so good.
Now that I've read them all my top three are:
- Dead Souls (1999)
- Black and Blue (1997)
- The Hanging Garden (1998)
I guess for me that makes the late 90's my golden age of Rebus.
