Lynne Truss: Eats, Shoots and Leaves– The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation!

Lynne Truss: Eats, Shoots and Leaves

Lynne Truss clearly feels passionate about punctuation and, unsurprisingly, knows how to write a nicely flowing and readable book. Unfortunately, with this readability comes a reduction in usefulness.

My ability to punctuate correctly was about average before reading Eats, Shoots & Leaves and afterwards it wasn't much better; I might almost say it was worse!

It isn't so much that the book is confusing it is more that it gives just enough information to be dangerous. I was hoping for some hard and fast rules, especially rules about semi-colons and colons: they are not to be found here.

The book would be useful to those confused by the comma and apostrophe but for those with a rudimentary grasp of these elementary points you'll just have to take a big breath and buy H.W. Fowler's: The King's English.
